I purchased the Econolux ART10947 (UBSCH70SS) 70cm Chimney Cooker Hood to replace a similar but more expensive Baumatic appliance that had finally died after many years of use. While this model is branded 'Econolux', the UBSCH70SS is a generic item available under various guises including Culina and CATA; I chose the Econolux version simply because it was available more cheaply than any other 70cm hood. In this regard, it is reasonable value, but I wouldn't like to guess as to how long its motor might actually last. In terms of energy efficiency, the overall 'B' rating is probably a little generous considering the fan/motor is only 'E' rated and the lighting 'C', and so a long way off top rated 'A+++' extractors, which is something to consider given the cost of energy and CO2 output. At this price one can hardly complain, but value as a measure over the long term will be eroded by energy use.

Other than the low purchase cost, one surprisingly good thing about the hood is how quiet it is; 63dB at full tilt is pretty good. The downside is that it's quiet probably because it's not even meeting it's claimed 345 m³/hour extraction rate. It certainly 'feels' like less air movement than my old Baumatic, for certain, but again, you get what you pay for. Sadly, the aluminium grease filters were slightly bent out of shape on arrival, and although similar in design to the ones in the old unit, are not as well constructed. I also found that in using a hanger type bracket to fix the unit to the wall, the unit had a tendency not to sit level/at 90 degrees, which became more noticeable when fitting the chimney section above. I cured this issue through using plastic spacers when fitting the two screws that DO attach directly to wall, inside the back of the hood itself. The hood is now perfectly level, but there's a small gap between the edge of the chimney and the wall as a consequence, which is easier to live with than an unlevel hood. The chimney section is not brilliantly conceived and is a bit on the fiddly side when attaching to the hood and the wall brackets.

If you're buying one, I recommend removing the plastic film covering the underside and edges of the hood PRIOR to fitting, but removing the rest AFTER fitting to avoid fingerprints and other stubborn marks which bare stainless steel easily picks up. Once installed and the (surprisingly stubborn) plastic film is removed, use a clean cloth or paper towel dampened with a scant amount of ordinary olive oil to gently wipe the whole unit; this will do a surprisingly good job of preventing further marks and will make it shine nicely. Cheaper than specialist products, too. Overall, I think it's a reasonable product for the price. The fitting instructions aren't quite as good as they could be, but are clear enough for any competent DIY'er to follow. Hopefully it will defy my expectations and run trouble-free for years.
