Don’t Leave Spills Too Long
Be quick if your microwave needs a clean, sponging up spills and splatters as soon as they happen. You might not be aware of this, but bits of food that have been left behind can create a hotspot that can damage the interior, as they can absorb some of the microwave’s energy.
When cleaning any spills, take care not to scratch the microwave by using anything too abrasive. Instead, use a damp, soft cloth and wipe away anything that needs attention.
Clean up spills swiftly and give your microwave the once over regularly – wiping it down in general as often as needed – and you’ll also be preventing it from rusting.
You can prevent food from splattering up the side of the microwave’s walls by ensuring you cook your food for the recommended time. Always read the label on pre-bought, microwaveable food – or look up thorough instructions if you’re microwaving homemade fare.
Don’t Try and Fix It
If your microwave is on the blink, don’t try to fix it yourself – well, not unless you’re a professional. Instead, start by consulting the manufacturer’s manual it came with, to see what to do in case of a breakdown.
Your appliance may still be in its warranty period, but if not, it’s rarely a good idea to start tinkering with the microwave yourself. Leave that to those who know what they’re doing, and you could save yourself the hassle of potentially damaging your microwave further still.
Don’t Slam Its Door
It stands to reason that if you look after your microwave, it’ll look after you, repaying you and your family with years of service. Don’t slam its door, then, as you could find that you could break some of the components within.
Often, microwaves have up to four safety interlock switches. These disable the oven when the door is open, but the switches must all line up with their corresponding latches when the door is closed. If you damage any of these latches, therefore, you may find that you can’t use the microwave at all. That’s a headache no one wants to suffer, so be gentle with that door and you’ll be glad you were.
Don’t Heat Food in Metal Containers
Avoid putting metal utensils or dishes in the microwave. Well, that is unless you want to see sparks flying, which is not advisable, of course. Avoid also putting dishes with a metal trim or gold or silver plating into your microwave. If any of these metals touch the sides of the interior, you may find that you’re left dealing with a hole in the cavity wall. Again, not something you’ll want to deal with.
