How to Clean Your Microwave: Our Top Tips

Microwave in need of some TLC? If you’re keen to see it looking as good as new, we’ve put together a handy guide for keeping on top of one of your most-used kitchen appliances.

For optimal performance from your microwave, read on for some top tips…

Try Washing Up Liquid and Baking Soda

As your first port of call, try good, old-fashioned washing up liquid (or dish soap, as it’s known in the US – and in this ‘how to clean a microwave’ article).

The piece states that washing up liquid can be effective, particularly when used with soda - and we’d agree.

1.     Begin by cleaning the microwave door – and its edges and sides, where it seals the oven. Use a sponge (avoid abrasive sponges or scourers, though), which has been dampened with water and dipped in a little baking soda. Then, simply use a damp cloth to rinse the solution from the microwave.

2.     Microwave window looking greasy? The Good Housekeeping site (above) suggests cleaning it with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water – and we too can confirm this will make light work of most stains and splatters. After you’ve done this, rinse and wipe the window dry.

3.     You may need something a little tougher for built-up and stuck-on food splatters; look for an all-purpose cleaner in the cleaning aisle of your supermarket. Grab one that’s good on grease and apply it with a cloth or sponge. Be careful not to spray the solution directly onto electronic controls, though. Instead, spray it onto a cloth first.

Lemon and Baking Soda are a great way to clean a Microwave

Use a Lemon!

Did you know you can technically clean a microwave with just a lemon (and some water)?

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with around 230ml of water. Add to it a full, sliced lemon or a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice. Then, simply place the bowl (with the sliced lemons inside) in your microwave and turn it on for five minutes.

Then, leave it (with the power off) to steam with the door shut. Wait another 15 minutes and then simply remove the bowl (taking care as you do, as it’ll still be very hot) and wipe the microwave clean with a damp cloth.

If you like, you can also clean the exterior with the lemony water. Add a couple of drops of washing up liquid too if you like.

Give Vinegar a Go

Yes, you can even use vinegar to clean your microwave – and you’ll find a handy video here, offering instructions on how to do so. It really is as simple as cleaning your microwave with lemon – and it’ll save you heading to the supermarket to buy another bottle of all-purpose cleaner.

How often should you clean your microwave? We say at least once a week, or as often as needed – and, of course, keeping on top of cleaning will prolong its life, too. Why not try one of these solutions and see how you get on?

Until next time…
