Organise Your Kitchen Like Marie Kondo

Have you been watching Marie Kondo’s Netflix series? It’s all about decluttering and overhauling every last inch of your home – and it comes direct from one of the world’s best-known (probably, anyway) organising experts.

Marie Kondo champions her very own style of tidying up – and it’s called the Kon-Marie method. If you’ve watched the series, you’ll be well aware of her organisational quirks, but if not, what are you waiting for? If you don’t have Netflix, you can watch mini episodes via YouTube too.

So, because the world seems to be going Kondo crazy, we’re sharing with you our own tips – inspired by the lady herself – for sprucing up your kitchen and making it a tidier, more relaxing space. Read on…

Pile Everything in One Place

Rather than starting cupboard by cupboard or drawer by drawer, Marie suggests that you grab related items from your whole house and pile them in one place. If, for example, you’d like to declutter the clothing you own, you’d grab every last garment from around the house and pile it on, say, the bed.

The same goes for your kitchen cupboards. Find all the kitchen-related items (mugs that may have made their way into bedrooms or home offices, or kitchen scissors that have found themselves in the dining room) and pile them all on the kitchen table. Now, you can see at a glance what you have – and, more importantly, what you have too much of.

Only Keep the Items That ‘Spark Joy’

A favourite phrase of Marie’s is ‘spark joy’ – but what does that actually mean? Simply put, if an item doesn’t spark joy (i.e. it makes you want to draw it to your chest and clutch it proudly), why are you keeping it? So, taking your kitchen items, one by one, which of them actually spark joy?

Of course, you’ll want to keep most items in your kitchen for completely practical reasons. But what about those novelty egg cups you own; do you really need 10 of them? Or do you have multiple tins of soup that’ll take you years to get through? Think about donating some to a food bank to free up some much needed space.

Make Use of Storage Boxes

Storage boxes – even the lids of shoe boxes – will become your best friends when you start tidying the Kon-Marie way.

Everyone has one of those drawers in their kitchen; you know, the one that’s filled with junk. Old bank statements, tape measures, cocktail sticks…you name it. Are you nodding in agreement? Marie suggests organising things by ‘type’ and using small storage boxes to do so. Once you’ve done that, everything will be so much easier to find.
