Cooking with Kids: Basic but Tasty Evening Meals They’ll Love

Oh, kids. They’re both adventurous and picky at the same time, so preparing meals for them can turn into something of a nightmare. But don’t throw down the (dish) towel just yet! Read on for a collection of recipes that will win over the pickiest children in the UK.

Cheesy Ham & Broccoli Pasta

First to the stage is the king of all comfort foods: mac and cheese! Your kids will love this creamy pasta dish, and so will you: brimming with ham chunks and broccoli, you can be sure your little ones are getting enough protein and veg in one delicious meal.

This cheap and easy recipe takes 30 minutes to complete and serves four.

Fish Pie

Try your hand at making this family friendly fish pie for something simple, fresh, and absolutely delicious. This recipe combines the melty goodness of white fish with creamy potatoes and plenty of cheese to create a dish that will have your kids begging for more.

This fish pie will be ready in an hour and 30 minutes. Though it serves four, perhaps you should double the recipe because your family will ask for seconds (or thirds or fourths)!

Bacon Bolognese

Who doesn’t love a plate of warm spaghetti? This bacon bolognese recipe combines pasta, veggies, pesto, and bacon for an excellent family meal. The bacon bits are perfect for kids who don’t prefer mince in their spaghetti.

Fast, easy, but simply delicious, this is one dish that both you and your family will enjoy.

Creamy Leek and Gorgonzola Risotto

It looks delicious, but it’s also quite healthy – so, have the best of both worlds with this fast risotto rice recipe. With seasonal leeks to give the dish a colourful pop, this cheesy risotto will win over your hard-to-please child.

Please note that this recipe does call for white wine. You may choose to omit this from the recipe.

Turkey & Coriander Burgers with Guacamole

If you think turkey and coriander burgers with guacamole sound healthy, you’d be right! These low-calorie, low-salt, and vitamin C-packed burgers are made with low-fat turkey bursting with herb flavours. This recipe calls for one chilli to make the spicy guacamole, but if your child doesn’t enjoy spicy food, it’s perfectly fine to omit this ingredient. Guacamole is still tasty, with or without chilli!

Toad-in-the-Hole

This playful dish is a hit with kids – though whether it’s because of the name or the flavour, we can’t be sure. For this recipe, pork sausages are cooked in a traditional Yorkshire pudding batter (gravy optional but recommended!). With little ingredients but lots of flavour, this dish is sure to satisfy your little ones for the evening.
