5 Ways With Superfoods

Superfoods! We’re told we need to eat more of them – but why? And what exactly are superfoods, anyway? The dictionary definition is this: a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and wellbeing.

So, where to start, since there are loads of superfoods out there and, seemingly, not enough hours in the day to eat them all. Today on the My Appliances blog, we’re focusing on the more popular ones – and what you can do with them this week (or at the weekend) to ensure a tasty meal or snack.

Sweet Potatoes

If you’re even a little bit of a foodie, you’ll know that sweet potatoes are cropping up on menus here, there and everywhere. A healthier alternative to fries or chips made from your usual potato, the sweet potato chip is jam-packed with health benefits.

So, how can you make it into a meal that’ll be both satisfying in terms of taste – and nutrients? The BBC Good Food website has the answer, via this easy-t0-make sweet potato-topped cottage pie – yum!

Kale

A favourite of fitness fanatics everywhere, kale is low in calories and high in fibre. Ideal for aiding digestion, it features a host of vitamins, including folate and magnesium. Can it easily be combined into a healthy and delicious family meal, though? The answer is ‘yes’!

Jamie Oliver has eight recipes which make use of the nutrient-packed green superfood, with everything from stew, to a ricotta bake on offer. Go on, give them a go!

Blueberries

This bright blue berry is another firm favourite of the superfood fan. Why? It contains fibre, potassium, folate, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and a unique phytonutrient content which encourages improved heart health. Ready to add more blueberries to you diet? These blueberry and coconut frozen cheesecake bars are the perfect post-dinner treat.

Avocado

Avocado has been an ‘in’ food for some time now; who doesn’t love one mashed up on some granary bread, a dippy egg on top?! But what else can you do with this nutrient-rich breakfast favourite? If you can believe it, there are a total of 50 avocado recipes over on this site.

That’s right; you can have a go at everything from avocado grilled cheese (that’s cheese on toast to us Brits!), spiced chicken tacos with avocado and pomegranate salsa, or even an ice cream which makes use of the superfood alongside lashings of lime. Yes, really. Just click the link above to find out more.

Raspberries

Our fifth and final superfood is the humble raspberry. Who would have thought a fruit so small could pack in so many health benefits?

But the raspberry really is a great addition to your diet. Rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber, they have a high concentration of ellagic acid, a phenolic compound that prevents cancer. This works by stopping the growth of cancer cells and eliminating the progress of cancers – who knew? Quick; head over to the BBC Good Food site for 10 ways to use raspberries in your meal plan.
