2019: Which Food Trends Will Be In?

From doughnut bouquets to activated charcoal ice cream, this year has seen a host of exciting food trends. Whether you’re a foodie or not, 2019’s trends are looking to be an interesting palate-crossing mix. See for yourself!

Probiotics

You’ve probably seen the word ‘probiotics’ on the side of your yogurt container, but, as it turns out, probiotics could venture out of the realm of dairy products and enter different food products. The Meetings and Conventions website suggests that probiotics, or ‘good gut bacteria’ qill see a boost in consumption in 2019. Why? There will be an expansion of fermented food products.

Kombucha is one such example. This naturally carbonated fermented tea is made from scoby, which is actually an acronym for ‘Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast.’ Expect to see more kombucha in 2019, as well as other fermented foods like kimchi, pickles, sauerkraut, tempeh and kefir. Your gut will love this trend!

Plant-Based Food

It has never been easier to go vegan, and this 2019 food trend proves just that. Kroger, the US supermarket company, suggested that more people will choose to reduce, if not cut out completely, meat and dairy intake in their diets. Whether you plan to go full vegan or you want to be kinder to the environment by eating meat every other day, you will have plenty more plant-based options to choose from.

The meatless meat industry will continue to grow, with products such as soy patties and meatless bacon finding their way onto more dinner plates. Grocery stores are also waiting on the release of heme – an environmentally sustainable meat alternative formed in Silicon Valley. We hear it’s just as tasty as the real thing!

Specialised Tea

While coffee has gained traction in the UK, you’ll never have to worry about waving your beloved cuppa goodbye! According to BBC Good Food, in 2019 you can look out for more tea bars serving up artisan teas, craft teas, nitrogen tea on top and perhaps even tea cocktails.

Tea remains popular for its many varieties and benefits, not to mention it’s hugely comforting to drink.

Locally-Sourced Food

In the interest of growing climate change concerns, as well as supporting local farms, people will begin buying food grown near them. Not only does locally-grown produce tend to be healthier – as it’s typically grown with the focus of quality over quantity – it’s also grown with an honest, environmentally-conscious mission statement that more people will find more appealing than mass-grown produce.

This trend doesn’t just apply to consumers. Restaurants will also begin beefing up their recipes with hyper-local foods, or ingredients sourced within walking distance. Look forward to healthier dishes with ingredients grown meaningfully.

As always, we can also expect to see a continued rise of creative, Instagram-worthy food trends. Although, as with the quirky matcha recipes cropping up this past year, not to mention the quirkier charcoal recipes. We can only look forward to what mouth-watering food trends await us in 2019!
