Always Use Washing Up Liquid – Don’t be tempted to simply dunk your dirty pots in hot water – it just want wash. Ahem. Soapy water is the only way to do it. Remember that Salmonella, E.coli, mould and yeast can dry onto utensils which you just haven’t scrubbed properly, so make sure you use a good washing up detergent and get cleaning!

Use Colour Coded Chopping Boards – Do as the top chefs do and start using colour coded chopping boards. If you are preparing a meal with meat or fish, for instance, use the right board and the correct knife to avoid cross-contamination. Trust us, it’s worth it.

Regularly Replace Scourers and Dishcloths – It may seem a simple one but too many people use the same dish cloth for months on end. When you consider that one disch cloth can contain thousands of bacteria, we bet you won’t be so complacent anymore. It really doesn’t have to cost a lot to replace cleaning products like this – you can pick them up relatively cheaply from bargain interiors shops and supermarkets – so make sure you keep your eyes peeled and stock up.

Clear Out Your Fridge as Often as Possible – Now, we’re not advising you to chuck out food which is perfectly fine to eat. What we are saying is keep an eye on things. Is there an old, mouldy block of cheese hiding at the back? Or perhaps your salad drawer’s started to leak water as a result of that old, out-of-date veg? Give your fridge a good ‘spring clean’ – but do it all year round – as and when you have the free time.

Clean Your Sink – Your sink is a spot that harbours the most germs; we hate to say it but it’s probably to do with those dish cloths. With this in mind, make sure you regularly clean it out with a fresh dish cloth. If you think on, add some bleach to it before bed – and give it a rinse in the morning. The result? A germ-free and extremely sparkly sink. It’ll be so shiny it’ll look like a brand new one – result!
